Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg has dodged a question on when the next state polls would be held, following the hint by his deputy, Dr Sim Kui Hian, that it would be held in less than 100 days.
When pressed by reporters, Abang Johari said he did not know. “How would I know? Ask Dr Sim. I don’t know,” the Dayak Daily quoted him as saying in Kuching today.
Sim, who is Sarawak United Peoples’ Party president, recently urged party members to prepare for intensified political activity and ramp up efforts to engage the public as they will be “fighting the war in less than 100 days from now.”
Sim is also the Gabungan Parti Sarawak vice-chairman.
However, Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu information chief Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said yesterday that only Abang Johari could determine when the state election is likely to be held.
Karim said the premier had the prerogative and discretion to choose when the state assembly should be dissolved. He also said that, as far as he was concerned, the 100 days Sim cited was merely a projection.
The state assembly’s term expires in February next year, unless dissolved earlier. An election must be held within 60 days of dissolution, or by April at the latest.
