KUCHING, March 19: The Iban community is set to lead the Sarawak-Level Gawai Dayak Celebration 2026, with plans to attract around 99 contingents to its flagship event, the “Gawai Niti Daun” parade, scheduled for June 20 at the Kuching Waterfront.
According to Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), this was announced during the First Meeting of the “Gawai Niti Daun” Subcommittee today, attended by representatives from government agencies, non-governmental organisations, and local communities.
The chairman of the subcommittee, and Deputy Minister in the Premier of Sarawak’s Department, Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat, expressed his appreciation for the trust given by the 2026 Sarawak-Level Gawai Dayak Celebration Main Committee to lead the parade’s organisation.
He highlighted that the parade is not only meant to enliven the Gawai Dayak celebration but also serves as a platform to showcase the rich culture, customs, and identity of the Dayak community in Sarawak through the participation of diverse contingents.
“This parade is more than a symbol of unity; it is a medium to display the unique cultural heritage of the Dayak community to the public,” he said.
Jamit also confirmed that the parade will continue to be held at the Kuching Waterfront, the main focal point for Gawai Dayak celebrations each year.
Reflecting on past events, the Bidayuh community, as hosts in 2024, successfully gathered 111 contingents, while the Orang Ulu recorded 91 contingents in 2025.
For 2026, the committee aims to engage around 99 contingents to enhance the parade’s vibrancy further.
The meeting also addressed early planning, task coordination, and strategic measures to ensure the event runs smoothly, is well-organised, and meets its objectives.
“Gawai Niti Daun” is expected to remain a highlight of the Sarawak-Level Gawai Dayak celebration, strengthening unity and pride in cultural heritage among the state’s multi-ethnic communities. — DayakDaily
