KUCHING (Oct 3): Satok assemblyman Datuk Ibrahim Baki has been appointed the new chairman of Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB).
SEB said Ibrahim took over from Datuk Amar Abdul Hamed Sepawi on Oct 1.
“Datuk Ibrahim brings over three decades of experience across industries such as property development, shipping, and media. A legal professional by training, he holds an LLB (Hons) from the United Kingdom and is a Barrister-at-Law from Lincoln’s Inn.
“He began his career as a Legal Officer at Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) in 1984, before co-founding the law firm Messrs Idris Buang, Ibrahim Baki & Co in Sarawak,” SEB said in a statement.
The utility corporation said Ibrahim also serves as a non-independent non-executive director of Petronas.
SEB said Abdul Hamed leaves behind an enduring legacy.
“Datuk Amar Abdul Hamed Sepawi, who has chaired the company since 2005, guided its transformation into a leading regional player in renewable energy and sustainability.”
Under his leadership, SEB expanded from a traditional utility with 2,042 employees and a generation capacity of 849MW in 2005 to over 6,000 employees and a capacity of 5,745MW today, said the corporation.
“During his tenure, the company achieved 99.5 per cent electrification across the state, up from 80 per cent in 2009. Datuk Amar Abdul Hamed’s contributions earned him numerous accolades including the Sarawak State Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2004 and 2005, and the BrandLaureate ‘Man of the Year’ Brand ICON Leadership Award in 2015.
“In 2022, he received the Outstanding Global Muslim Entrepreneur Lifetime Achievement Award at the Global Muslim Business Forum. Most recently, last year, Datuk Amar Abdul Hamed was appointed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as a member of a special advisory body comprising professionals and economic experts to advise the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) in his role as Finance Minister,” said SEB.
The corporation also extended its gratitude to Tan Sri Dato Sri Mohd Hassan Marican, who served as its independent non-executive director from June 9, 2010 until Aug 1 this year.
“His expertise and insights, particularly from his extensive experience in leading multinational organisations in the energy sector, have been integral to Sarawak Energy’s successful transformation into a key player in renewable energy development and international ventures,” said SEB.
Mohd Hassan has been appointed by the Prime Minister as the chairman of the Policy Advisory Committee, which provides counsel on national development and economic resilience.
