KUCHING (Oct 16): The International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak (IDECS) 2024 will explore how artificial intelligence (AI) can be harnessed to address pressing global challenges while promoting sustainable practices, said Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki.
The State Secretary pointed out that as the world grapples with the challenges of climate change, environmental degradation and resource depletion, it has become increasingly clear that embracing advanced technologies such as AI is crucial in addressing these issues.
“This year’s IDECS themed ‘AI for Sustainable Development: Navigating the Green and Circular Future’ resonated with the global imperative for sustainable development and our commitment to creating a future for economic prosperity, social inclusivity and environmental sustainability,” he said at IDECS opening ceremony which was officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here today.
He said several programmes have been curated in alignment with the theme featuring sessions on The Future, Future Cities, She Tech, and the Start-Up Village.

“This session will explore smart city initiatives, sustainable urban planning, and the role of AI in creating liveable, efficient and green cities,” he said.
He said the She Tech session is designed to empower and inspire women in the field of technology.
“It will feature accomplished female leaders and pioneers who have made remarkable advancements in the tech industry, sharing their insights and experiences.
“By promoting diversity and inclusion in technology, we can unlock the full potential of our talent pool and stimulate innovation across all sectors of society,” he said.
On the Start-Up Village, Abu Bakar said it is designed to nurture entrepreneurial spirit and foster innovation.
“This session will provide insights into the challenges and opportunities faced by start-ups in the digital economy, focusing on how AI can drive innovation and entrepreneurship.”
He also said that the discussions at IDECS will place a strong emphasis on green technologies and innovations, fostering collaborative partnerships, ensuring equity and access, shaping effective policies and regulations, and promoting circular supply chains.
He said this year marked the seventh edition of IDECS, highlighting Sarawak’s ongoing commitment to fostering innovation and advancing the digital economy through this platform.
“Since its inception in 2017, IDECS has played a pivotal role in shaping strategies, fostering collaborations and accelerating Sarawak’s progress toward its goal of becoming a top-tier digital economy by 2030,” he added.
IDECS 2024, which ends today, will consist of high-level discussions on the role of AI in addressing global challenges, building sustainable business models, and positioning Sarawak as a digital hub in Southeast Asia.
Renowned AI futurist Dr Jordan Nguyen delivered a keynote at the opening ceremony entitled ‘The Future with AI’, where he discussed how AI will transform industries, enable sustainable innovations, and unlock opportunities across global markets.
His address highlighted AI’s role in accelerating Sarawak’s transition to a green economy and fostering innovation in line with the state’s ambitions.
