KOTA KINABALU (Dec 31): The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) Sabah Branch has urged greater emphasis on safe, sustainable and resilient engineering practices as the state enters the New Year 2026.
In his New Year message, IEM Sabah vice chairman I Ir. Ts. Tan KJ, FIEM, JP said engineering plays a critical role in safeguarding daily life, even though its contributions often go unnoticed by the public.
“As we welcome 2026, engineers are reminded that every project we undertake ultimately serves one purpose – to make life safer and more secure for the people,” he said.
He noted that essential services such as clean water supply, road and bridge connectivity, flood mitigation works and reliable electricity are the results of careful planning and dedication by engineers, despite being taken for granted in everyday life.
Tan stressed that engineering in the coming years must be carried out responsibly, with strong consideration for environmental sustainability, long-term climate risks and public safety.
“The quality of engineering work directly affects the safety and well-being of every family. Development must be balanced with environmental care, and high professional standards must always be upheld,” he said.
He highlighted ongoing challenges faced by Sabah, including water disruptions, flooding, ageing roads, traffic congestion and climate-related risks, saying these issues require proper planning, sound financial management and effective implementation rather than shortcuts.
According to him, close cooperation and mutual understanding between the government, engineers and the public are essential to address these challenges effectively.
Tan also emphasised the importance of nurturing the next generation of engineers, noting that beyond technical competence, young engineers must develop a strong sense of responsibility and commitment to serving society.
“Ultimately, the future of Sabah will rest in their hands,” he said.
Looking ahead, Tan said IEM Sabah remains committed to working closely with all stakeholders to promote people-centred, reliable and safe infrastructure development across the state.
He expressed hope that 2026 would be a year in which engineering is recognised as a reassuring force that quietly protects and improves the daily lives of Sabahans.
