The participants of the IEM-UMS Career Talk 2025.
KOTA KINABALU (Dec 11): The IEM-UMS Career Talk 2025 was successfully organised on Wednesday at Galeri Majlis, Bangunan Canselori, Universiti Malaysia Sabah.
Organized by the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Sabah Branch, in collaboration with Young Engineers Section (Sabah Branch), and the IEM Student Section, Faculty of Engineering UMS, the programme aimed to broaden students’ exposure to diverse engineering career pathways. A total of 80 students from various disciplines such as electrical, mechanical, civil, chemical, oil and gas and computer engineering participated in the one-day programme.
The ceremony was officially officiated by Professor Ir. Dr Rosalam Haji Sarbatly, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research & Innovation), Universiti Malaysia Sabah, whose presence reflected strong institutional support towards strengthening professional exposure among young engineers. His officiation marked the formal commencement of the event and set an encouraging tone for students to embrace innovation as they shape their future careers.
Also present and honoured at the event were Datuk Ir. Ts. Mohd Yaakob bin Hj. Jaafar, CEO of Sabah Electricity and Chairman of IEM Sabah Branch, Associate Professor Ir. Dr Abu Zahrim Bin Yaser (Dean, Faculty of Engineering UMS), Ir. Dr. Chua Bih Lii (Club Advisor of IEM-UMS Student Section), Lee Tze Yei (Chairman of IEM-YES Sabah Branch), Ts. Dr Nurul Shahadatul Afizah Binti Asman (Leader, IEM-YES Sabah Graduate and Student), and Ag Khairul Akmal Bin Kamaludin (Immediate Past Chairman, IEM-YES Sabah).
Five invited speakers from different engineering industries delivered impactful and insightful presentations:
Datuk Ir. Ts. Mohd Yaakob bin Hj Jaafar (Empowering Sabah’s Energy Future).
Ir. Ts. Thien Sen Fong (Engineering Sustainability Through Water Solutions).
Komander Ir. Shahriman bin Shawaluddin (From Battlefield to Workshop: Leadership Lessons).
Ts. Dr. Terence Jerome Daim (Beyond the Earth: Engineering in the Space Age).
Ir. Dickson Wong (Building a Sustainable World: Civil Engineering Perspectives).
The event ended with a lively Q&A, with various questions such as what employers look for in fresh graduates, in which fellow engineers shared their real-world expectations, leaving everyone inspired and ready to explore career opportunities.
The success of the event was made possible by IEM-YES Sabah, Graduate and Student leader, Ts. Dr. Nurul Shahadatul and IEM-UMS Student Section Committee, led by director, Efrain Harris Modoit and supported by vice director Eronnel Pius Alex, emcees Nur Eizatul Syafinna Binti Jarmin alongside Muhamad Juliqram bin Rahman, and the floor manager, Meloney Diva Binti Patrick.
