KUCHING, Jan 3: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has increased fines for improper disposal of garden and construction waste to RM200 for the first offense, effective this year, as part of efforts to strengthen cleanliness and environmental responsibility in the city.

Repeat offenders face a fine of RM500 and may be brought to court, where penalties can include imprisonment.

MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the stricter enforcement aims to curb illegal dumping and ensure residents and contractors properly dispose of renovation debris.

“When you do renovations, contractors must clear the waste properly. You cannot just throw it away carelessly,” he said during his ShallWeeTalk live session today.

Wee emphasised that contractors should lead by example and not cut corners to save money.

“Garden and construction waste must be disposed of responsibly, either through licensed waste collection services such as Trienekens or by placing it with household trash,” he said.

He warned that improper disposal, including leaving debris in parks or drains, can cause flooding and contribute to health risks such as dengue.

Wee stressed the long-term consequences of negligent waste management, noting that even small actions can have serious environmental and public health impacts.

“We in Kuching are civilised people. These actions may seem small, but their long-term effects are far beyond what you might expect. Everyone must take responsibility,” he reminded.

MBKS encouraged residents to photograph and report any illegal dumping to assist enforcement efforts, underscoring the council’s commitment to maintaining a clean and safe city. — DayakDaily
