MIRI (Jan 27): Illegal rubbish dumping near SMK Merbau has become a growing cause for concern, posing serious health, safety and environmental risks to the surrounding community.

Mayor Adam Yii issued a stern warning against the indiscriminate dumping, stressing that the behaviour will not be tolerated, particularly as it has resulted in pollution, unsightly conditions and potential breeding grounds for pests and disease, while negatively affecting the area’s image and cleanliness.

He said dumping waste in the vicinity of SMK Merbau sends the wrong message to schoolchildren, normalising irresponsible behaviour and undermining efforts to instil environmental awareness and civic responsibility among the younger generation.

“The public must remember that illegal dumping is an offence under Section 18(2) of the Local Authorities (Cleanliness) By-Laws, carrying a fine of RM1,000 for a first offence and RM2,000 or up to six months’ imprisonment, or both, for repeat offenders,” he told reporters after chairing the Miri City Council (MCC) monthly full council meeting on Monday.

Yii called on the community and schools to work closely with the local authority to address the issue by remaining vigilant, educating the public on proper waste disposal, cooperating with enforcement actions and promptly reporting any illegal dumping activities.

“Members of the public can lodge reports via Talikhidmat or the Miri Cares application.

“Keeping our environment clean is a shared responsibility.

“By working together, we can protect our children, preserve our surroundings and ensure a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable Miri for all,” he added.
