MIRI: Indonesia’s basketball teams dominated the 33rd ASEAN Veteran Basketball Tournament 2024.
The tournament, which ended on September 9, brought together veteran teams from seven countries — Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Myanmar, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia.
The five-day event, which kicked off on September 5, saw teams competing across four categories: 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s age groups.
In the 40s category, local pride shone through as CH3 Kuching from Sarawak claimed the championship title, narrowly defeating ASABA from Jakarta, Indonesia, who took second place. Kinsar, also from Sarawak, finished in third place.
Indonesia’s ASABA teams dominated the 50s and 60s categories. In the 50s category, Buls ASABA Red from Jakarta took home the championship title, while their compatriots from Buls ASABA White secured second place. Kinsar from Sarawak rounded out the top three.
Similarly, in the 60s category, Buls ASABA (Jakarta) emerged as champions, with Meteor from Pontianak, Indonesia, coming in second. Sarawak’s Kinsar secured yet another third-place finish.
In the 70s category, the Philippines’ FCVBA took home the top honours, with Sarawak’s Hornbill team coming in second. Meteor from Pontianak finished third.
The tournament’s closing ceremony saw the presentation of prizes by Councillor Jeferry Phang, the tournament’s organising chairman.
Also in attendance were Cr. Leslie Lau Ik Chie, representing Sarawak’s Deputy Minister for Tourism, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, as well as Kelvin Hii, the representative of Miri Mayor Adam Yii, and the president of the ASEAN Veteran Basketball Conference (AVBC), Mah Poi Sang.
The tournament fostered camaraderie and competition among veteran athletes, with Indonesia’s strong showing highlighting their ongoing commitment to basketball excellence in the region.
