KUCHING (Sept 20): Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s proposal to host the Borneo Games will be submitted to the relevant parties in Indonesia, said Raden Sigit Witjaksono.

The Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia in Kuching said this in his speech during the Diplomatic Reception to Commemorate the 79th Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia here last night.

“Borneo’s cooperation extends beyond economic sectors and connectivity. Collaboration among the Bornean people forms a strong foundation for a more advanced and prosperous Borneo.

“The Premier of Sarawak’s proposal to hold the Borneo Games event deserves support. We from Indonesia will convey this proposal to the relevant parties in Indonesia, with the hope that it will become an annual sports event in Borneo,” he said.

Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah represented Abang Johari at the event.

Last month during the Malaysia Games (Sukma) XXI Sarawak dinner reception here, Abang Johari had proposed reviving the Borneo Games.

First held in Brunei in 1954, the Borneo Games involved Brunei, Sarawak, and North Borneo (Sabah), with each region taking turns to host the event.

The last edition of the games was held in Brunei in 2009.
