Indonesian jailed 8 months for machete attack in Tabuan Jaya, four months for overstaying

KUCHING (Oct 4): An Indonesian man was sentenced to eight months in jail by the Magistrates’ Court here today for assaulting a 17-year-old girl with a machete.

Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan convicted Jong Chung Lim on his own guilty plea to a charge under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years or a fine or whipping, upon conviction.

Jong committed the offence at a house in Jalan Urat Mata, Tabuan Jaya here at around 9pm on Sept 27, 2024.

Based on the facts of the case, the victim and her sister were attacked by an unknown man with a machete shortly after they arrived home.

The incident left the victim with minor injuries to her left arm and back.

The victim’s sister related the incident to their uncle, and a police report lodged led to Jong’s arrest around 10.35pm the same day next to a mall in Jalan Wan Alwi.

In a separate proceeding in the Sessions Court before judge Afidah Abdul Rahman today, Jong was sentenced to four months in jail after he pleaded guilty to overstaying in Malaysia.

The charge against him was framed under Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, punishable under Section 15(4) of the same Act.

Based on the charge sheet, Jong’s social visit pass had expired on April 14, 2024.

The cases were prosecuted separately by Insp Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin and DPP Iezzah Iburdanisha Ibrahim, while Jong was unrepresented by counsel.
