KUCHING, Apr 15: Italy is exploring potential collaboration with Sarawak in the energy and aerospace sectors, highlighting its long-standing experience in aerospace and growing interest in Sarawak’s development in the field.
According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Italian Ambassador to Malaysia Raffaele Langella said Italy has been active in the aerospace sector for decades and has built a strong industry base, a field that also aligns with Sarawak’s expanding focus.
He noted that Italy was among the earliest countries to venture into space technology.
“Not many people know that Italy was the third country in the world to launch a satellite into space around 70 or 80 years ago, after the United States and the USSR, now known as Russia.
“Since then, we have been active in this field for several decades and have developed a solid aerospace industry, which is also a sector that the Sarawak government is very interested in,” he said at a press conference after paying a courtesy call on Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at Kompleks Satria Pertiwi here today.
Building on this shared interest, Langella said there are opportunities for both sides to explore cooperation in aerospace development.
He added that several Italian business delegations are expected to visit Sarawak in the near future to explore potential investment opportunities.
On the energy sector, he said it remains another key area of interest, particularly in infrastructure and technology related to energy production, including renewable energy.
“We are very interested in the ASEAN grid and all projects related to this mega ASEAN initiative,” he said.
He added that Italy is also active in the biofuel sector, which aligns with Sarawak’s priorities amid evolving global energy market conditions.
Beyond energy and aerospace, Langella also highlighted potential cooperation in the creative design field, particularly involving traditional design and emerging young designers in Sarawak.
He said these local talents could benefit from exposure and collaboration with established Italian designers, helping to further develop the design industry between both sides. — DayakDaily
