KOTA KINABALU (Dec 7): Newly appointed Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin conducted inspections of several key tourism jetties around Kota Kinabalu on Sunday as part of efforts to upgrade facilities and ensure visitor safety and comfort.

The inspection covered Jesselton Point, the Sabah Parks Jetty and the South Jetty owned by Suria Capital, which is currently under construction at an estimated cost of RM20 million.

During the visit, Jafry emphasised that several facilities and infrastructure at the jetties require urgent maintenance to enhance the comfort and safety of tourists arriving in Sabah.

He also inspected Pulau Sulug, where the staff quarters belonging to Sabah Parks were found to be dilapidated, damaged and in dire need of attention.

Jafry said the situation cannot be ignored as it involves the safety and welfare of officers and staff responsible for protecting the state’s tourism conservation areas.

“This is a safety issue, and I want immediate action. Staff stationed on the islands must be provided with safe and conducive accommodation,” he stressed.

He said the matter will be discussed promptly and in detail with the ministry for follow-up action and a long-term solution.

The ministry, he added, will continue monitoring and improving tourism facilities statewide to ensure Sabah remains one of the country’s premier tourism destinations.
