SIBU (Feb 10): Construction of Jalan Kemuyang–Pasai Teku is 8.11 per cent complete and is ahead of schedule by about two per cent, Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee said.
Dr Annuar revealed that barring any unforeseen circumstances, the project is expected to be completed by September 2027.
“When completed, the road is expected to significantly reduce travel time from Teku to Sibu Airport by allowing residents to bypass the town centre.
“It will also help improve accessibility for eight longhouses in the Kemuyang–Teku area,” he told reporters during a site visit on Tuesday.
Dr Annuar said the road construction is divided into three phases.
He said Phase 1 covers the initial stretch and will be a single carriageway built to R3 standard.
“Phase 2, stretching from Jalan Pasai–Kemuyang Road to the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS), will be a dual carriageway, while Phase 3, from Taman Kenari to Jalan Oya, will be a single carriageway of R3 standard.”

Dr Annuar said the project has faced no major issues so far, noting the advantages of constructing the road on greenfield land with no utilities to relocate and no traffic to manage
He said the main engineering challenges involved the hilly terrain and scattered areas of peat soil, which required certain sections to be elevated for stability.
He added that the project will include about 700 metres of elevated roadway, making it the first road in Sarawak to adopt this elevated-platform concept.
“The project will also spur development away from the overcrowded town centre, with potential for residential projects and an administrative centre, pending government approval.”
