TENOM (Feb 26): Efforts to ease the burden of residents affected by flooding in Tenom have been intensified, said Datuk Jamawi Jaafar.
The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry said various forms of immediate assistance have been mobilised to ensure flood victims receive essential supplies quickly, including food, clean water, hygiene kits and daily necessities, as relief operations continue across affected areas in Tenom.
“So far, 12 temporary evacuation centres (PPS) have been opened throughout the Melalap constituency, accommodating about 450 households, involving nearly 1,500 affected residents,” said the Melalap assemblyman.
He said all evacuation centres are being closely managed.
“These centres are carefully supervised so that victims are safe and well cared for while they remain there,” he said.
Jamawi noted that Tenom has experienced flooding three times since the beginning of the year, placing additional pressure on both residents and authorities in managing emergency situations.
“The close cooperation between the Tenom District Office, Malaysian Civil Defence Force, Fire and Rescue Department, and Welfare Department has been the key factor in ensuring smooth relief operations.
“All agencies involved are working in an integrated manner to speed up the delivery of aid to victims,” he said.
Beyond emergency assistance, Jamawi said his office and the ministry are also assessing the need for follow-up support, including house-cleaning operations, damage assessments, and the channelling of recovery aid.
“These steps are aimed at helping residents return to their normal lives as quickly as possible once floodwaters recede,” he said.
He stressed the importance of preventive measures, advising residents to continuously monitor weather conditions and comply with instructions from authorities to ensure the safety of their families.
Jamawi also praised the local community for stepping forward to help flood victims through the voluntary provision of food, clothing, and other necessities.
