KUCHING, Apr 13: Travel time between Bintulu town centre and the airport is expected to be reduced to about 10 minutes once the Jepak–Bintulu Airport dual-carriageway is completed with the project currently showing strong progress and potential early delivery ahead of its October 2027 deadline.

According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Sarawak Datuk Ir Aidel Lariwoo said the 4.1-kilometre project is progressing steadily, supported by favourable site conditions and continuous on-site works.

“The project, which was originally scheduled for completion in October 2027, could now be delivered ahead of schedule given the current rate of progress and its relatively short alignment.

“Based on the current progress and scope of works, the contractor has the potential to complete the project earlier than scheduled,” he said during a site visit here today.

Once completed, the dual carriageway is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Bintulu town centre and the airport, reducing the travel distance to under eight kilometres from the current 25 kilometres, and cutting journey time from nearly 30 minutes to about 10 minutes.

Aidel said earlier land acquisition issues that had previously slowed progress have now been resolved through close coordination between local representatives, the Public Works Department (JKR) and the Land and Survey Department.

“With no more land issues, the contractor now has better access to the site and works are progressing according to schedule,” he noted.

He also provided updates on other key developments in Bintulu, noting that the Integrated Administrative Centre (IAC) is now nearing physical completion, with construction expected to be completed by end-June, subject to the delivery of building materials.

He said that once completed, government agencies will require additional time to prepare for relocation into the new facility.

“The IAC Bintulu will become one of the iconic buildings in the Jepak area and will strengthen the delivery of government services,” he remarked.

Both the dual-carriageway and the IAC form part of broader infrastructure upgrades aimed at improving connectivity and enhancing administrative efficiency in Bintulu. — DayakDaily
