KUCHING, Oct 14: A proposal for a more systematic fish market in Jepak, first raised by traders in 2023, remains on the agenda as assemblyman Iskandar Turkee renews his call for a proper facility to support local fishermen and seafood traders.
Speaking during the debate on the Sarawak Budget 2027 at the State Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today, Iskandar referred to a TVS interview held on Oct 31, 2023, where traders appealed for a new fish market in Jepak.
He said a properly organised fish market could provide a centralised location for fishermen, traders and buyers to conduct transactions, allowing fishermen to sell their catch directly to consumers.
“The proposed facility would also help ensure better management of fish landings, waste disposal and cleanliness, creating a more systematic and hygienic environment for both traders and buyers,” he said.
The Jepak assemblyman said a proper fish market could help fishermen secure more consistent income by providing a direct sales channel for their catch, while reducing reliance on intermediaries and helping to stabilise fish prices.
He added that the facility could also create business opportunities for small traders, cleaning service providers and other local businesses, while potentially attracting visitors interested in Jepak’s fishing culture and seafood trade.
“A systematic fish market would therefore serve not only as a place to sell seafood but also as a platform to strengthen the local fishing economy and support the livelihoods of the community,” he explained. —DayakDaily
