KUCHING (Dec 3): The Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) has reaffirmed its commitment to deliver 503 projects worth RM43.34 billion by the end of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), said Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

The Deputy Premier and Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development said the projects funded under the state development allocation cover key infrastructure sectors comprising 301 road projects, 70 bridges, 105 building projects, 25 riverine structures, one Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL) port in Bebuling, and the Limbang Airport runway extension.

“Progress on these initiatives remains on track, with 239 projects completed worth RM9.44 billion; 139 currently under construction costing RM20.69 billion; and 125 at the pre-contract stage amounting to RM13.21 billion,” he said when delivering his ministerial winding-up speech in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) here today.

On bridge construction, Uggah said Sarawak is undertaking a comprehensive programme valued at RM7.316 billion for 143 projects to enhance connectivity across the state.

This includes 21 major bridges worth RM6.92 billion and the Rural Bridge Transformation Programme (RBTP), which has allocated RM396 million for 122 rural bridge projects.

To date, JKR Sarawak has completed eight major bridges – Marudi Bridge, Muara Lassa Bridge, Tun Taib Mahmud Bridge, Tun Datuk Patinggi Tuanku Haji Bujang bin Tuanku Haji Othman Bridge, Batang Saribas Bridge, Sungai Lingga Bridge, Batang Kemena (Sebauh) Bridge, and Datuk Amar Juma’ani Bridge.

Apart from the completed works, he said the remaining major bridge projects are progressing well, with 10 currently under construction — nine of which are expected to be completed in 2026, while three are at the pre-contract stage.

“For the RBTP, 70 bridges are at the pre-contract stage, 30 are in the tendering phase, and 22 are under construction,” he added.
