KUCHING, June 2: Ruby, one of the resident orangutans at the Semenggoh Wildlife Centre, was spotted carrying her newborn baby on May 19, marking a heartwarming discovery by rangers on duty and confirming her first-ever offspring.
According to a post shared on its social media on Sunday (May 31), the centre stated that rangers made the unexpected and joyful discovery at around 5.50pm last Tuesday.
The sighting quickly drew excitement among the centre’s staff, as it not only marked Ruby’s transition into motherhood but also revealed a rare and historic milestone for the facility.
What makes the moment particularly historic is that the newborn is the first recorded fourth-generation birth at the centre, underscoring decades of sustained rehabilitation and conservation work.
The birth is being hailed by the centre as a strong indicator of the success of ongoing efforts to protect and rehabilitate the Bornean Orangutan population under human care, while maintaining conditions that support natural breeding behaviours across generations.
In a brief statement, the centre expressed hope for the health and well-being of Ruby and her infant, wishing them a safe and bright future as monitoring and care continue.
The latest birth adds to Semenggoh’s growing record of successful orangutan rehabilitation and reinforces its role as one of Sarawak’s most important wildlife conservation centres. — DayakDaily
