MIRI (March 11): The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is helping bring essential transport services closer to rural communities in the Miri division, said Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.
He said the initiative enables residents in remote areas to access JPJ services without having to travel long distances to the city.
According to him, an additional mobile service vehicle has been deployed this year, bringing the total number of units serving the Miri division to two.
“These mobile services travel to rural areas such as Marudi and Subis, allowing residents to access JPJ services without having to travel all the way to Miri,” he told reporters after checking out JPJ Miri Mobile Service Units here.
Among the services provided, he said, are driving licence renewals, payment of traffic summonses and road tax renewals.
Lee thanked JPJ Sarawak for providing the additional mobile unit, noting that the service has proven highly beneficial for rural communities.
Meanwhile, JPJ Sarawak director Norizan Jili, who was also present during the programme, said the mobile service operates according to a schedule and also responds to requests from local leaders.
“For example, in Marudi we usually go once a week. For other areas, it depends on requests from local leaders or when there are certain programmes where they ask us to be present,” he said.
Norizan said the response from the public has been very encouraging, as the service allows residents to deal with JPJ matters closer to home.
“In fact, the residents often look forward to these visits because it is their opportunity to renew their licences and access other JPJ services,” he said.
He added that motorcycles older than three years can also be inspected during these visits to facilitate renewal procedures.
According to Norizan, JPJ mobile services in Miri currently record the highest usage in Malaysia, reflecting strong demand for the initiative among rural communities.
Lee said the high usage clearly demonstrates the need for such services in the Miri division and welcomed JPJ’s continued outreach efforts.
