KUCHING (April 9): Three athletes reached a milestone for the Jun Lun Professional Wushu Training Centre at the recent World Junior Wushu Championships 2026 in Tianjin, China with outstanding performances.

Leading the charge was Crystal Wee Yu Tang who clinched a joint gold medal in the Girls C daoshu event with a score of 8.513 points with Indonesia’s Jenny Ngaserin, in addition to securing a silver in changquan and finishing fourth in gunshu.

Her breakthrough also marked the centre’s first gold medal on the world junior stage.

Crystal’s brother Bryan Wee Hao Quan also impressed with a silver medal in Boys C daoshu, alongside bronze medals in both changquan and gunshu events.

Meanwhile, Amber Tan Ling Xin displayed commendable technical ability in the highly competitive youth category, finishing eighth in both gunshu and daoshu, as well as seventh in the changquan preliminary round.

The stellar performances build on Jun Lun’s growing presence on the international stage since Morven Phua Yan Hao became the centre’s first athlete to represent Malaysia in 2023.

In recognition of the athletes’ success, the centre recently held an executive committee (exco) meeting and celebration dinner attended by its leadership and coaching team, including president Lucas Lim Tee Kiat, deputy president Patrick Tan Tak Hong, vice president Wee Kee Liang, treasurer Allen Wong Chin Jiun, technical advisor Lau Hui Wei, chief coach William Bong Kuet Jung and coach Yeo Hui Ting.

The meeting reviewed the centre’s first-quarter progress and approved the staging of the 2026 Kuching Wushu Open Tournament, scheduled for July 4 and 5, at the state team training venue, with Bong appointed as organising chairman.

The exco agreed that this year’s tournament would be conducted on a more compact scale, taking into account the centre’s recent relocation, rising operational costs and funding considerations in a Sukma year.

The event has also been renamed the ‘2026 Kuching Wushu Open Tournament’ to reflect broader regional participation, including athletes from Bau and Padawan.

The tournament will be organised with the support of the Wushu Federation of Sarawak, Majlis Sukan Negeri Sarawak, Sarawak Sports Corporation and the Sarawak Education Department.

In his remarks, Lim congratulated the athletes for their achievements, attributing their success to discipline, commitment, dedicated coaching and strong parental support.

He described the gold medal as a landmark moment for the centre, signalling that its long-term development system is beginning to yield results at the highest level.

“We will now move forward with preparations for the upcoming tournament, while continuing our efforts to contribute to the growth of wushu in Sarawak and Malaysia,” he added.
