KUCHING (Feb 7): Women, Family and Community Development Minister Dato Sri Nancy Shukri visited Sematan today to personally deliver cash assistance to two bedridden patients, as part of the ministry’s ongoing effort to reach vulnerable groups through its ‘Kamek Nengar, Kamek Nulong’ Local Social Support Programme (PSSS).
The initiative brings social services directly to communities, allowing officials to assess the needs of residents firsthand, provide immediate aid, and ensure that support for the elderly and disabled is both timely and effective.
The first bedridden patient visited was Jamilah Abdullah, 74, who resides in Kampung Tanah Hitam, followed by a visit to the home of Juana Hamdan, 55.
Nancy said bedridden patients and their caregivers should be given continuous support so they do not feel marginalised or alone in facing life’s challenges, adding that such visits also provide an opportunity to assess patients’ actual conditions and identify further assistance required.
During the visit, Nancy, who is also Santubong MP, presented RM500 in cash to each patient.
Yayasan Kebajikan Negara (YKN) chief executive officer Nordina Haron also handed over RM500 to each recipient, while Social Welfare Department deputy director Mohd Ali Taib, who was present, presented immediate welfare aid amounting to RM300.
She expressed hope that the contributions would help ease the families’ financial burden and assist in meeting the patients’ basic needs.
Earlier, when launching the ‘Kamek Nengar, Kamek Nulong’ PSSS programme, Nancy said it enables the ministry’s services to be brought directly to the community to ensure information and assistance are delivered effectively.
She added that for the programme at Kampung Terusan Jaya, the programme received close cooperation from the Surau An-Nur committee, YKN volunteers, the village JKKK, and residents, who have worked hand in hand over the past two days.
“We hope all these efforts can bring benefits, comfort and strengthen the spirit of togetherness among residents and congregants,” she said during the visit.
She also urged villagers to interact with registered counsellors to assess the level of stress they may be facing, in line with efforts to emphasise that mental wellbeing is as important as physical health.
During the visit, Nancy presented a cash contribution of RM10,000 to Surau An-Nur to support various activities and programmes planned by the surau, while five boxes of funeral kits were also handed over as basic preparation for funeral management and to facilitate fardu kifayah matters in the village.
Among those present earlier at the programme were Nordina, Mohd Ali, Sarawak National Population and Family Development Board director Jimbau Munggat, local heads of departments, and community leaders.
