KAPIT (March 1): A programme aimed at introducing and strengthening understanding of the Bagatan ethnic community’s culture and customs was held at Rumah Philip, Nanga Merit here yesterday.
The event, ‘Program Kenali Budaya dan Adat Resam Etnik Bagatan’, was officiated by State Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Snowdan Lawan at the longhouse.
Organised by the Sarawak Entrepreneurs Association in collaboration with the local community, the programme aims to promote appreciation of Bagatan cultural heritage, part of Sarawak’s rich legacy.
Its implementation was supported under the Facilitation Fund for Heritage and Arts, which empowers preservation, documentation, and transmission of intangible cultural knowledge.
“The Bagatan are one of Sarawak’s 34 ethnic groups, with fewer than 10,000 people.
“Traditionally from 18 longhouses in the Rajang, Anap in Bintulu and Penyarai in Tatau areas, they are known for distinct customs, language, oral history, intangible heritage and traditional practices,” Snowdan said in a statement.
The programme also highlighted the development of handicrafts and heritage-based entrepreneurship, allowing Bagatan cultural heritage to serve as a potential economic resource through traditional handicrafts, decorative arts, attire, and creative innovations rooted in local identity.
“This initiative is expected to provide economic empowerment opportunities for community entrepreneurs, particularly youths and women,” he added.
Also present at the ceremony were the ministry’s Heritage and Creative Industry Division head Dr Elena Chai, Kapit Resident representative Daniel Batin, Kapit District Council chairman Andy Lawrence, Sarawak Entrepreneurs Association secretary Cecilia Lagak, as well as community leaders, longhouse chiefs, entrepreneurs and residents.
