KUCHING, Jan 17: The first rabies case in 2026 in Sarawak was brought by a stray dog at Kemena Sutra, Bintulu.
The dog which was tested positive for rabies was found at Phase 4 of Kemena Sutra, Bintulu.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng who announced the case during his ShallWeeTalk live session said the rabid canine had been removed, but urged the cooperation and vigilance of all residents across Sarawak to ensure zero rabies cases.
Meanwhile, he also took the opportunity to unveil the “doufang (斗方)“ or square-shaped Chinese calligraphic paintings which MBKS has designed in conjunction with the upcoming Chines New Year Celebration. The public, he said, will soon see them display at various markets under its jurisdiction.
The calligraphic writings on these doufangs are the works of several individuals including primarily school students.
“The one with a horse is the work of a famous artist in Kuching. We were given the permission to use the image. The rest are by primary school students of other ethnicities including Iban and Malay.
“Apart from food and festive celebrations, cultures and traditions of various ethnicity may also be preserved through calligraphic paintings, fine art, and other artistic expressions,” said Wee.
MBKS will also producing well-designed Chinese New Year red packets nearing Chinese New Year.
To welcome 2026, the year of Horse, MBKS is also giving away red horse plushies for those who tune in to Wee’s weekly “ShallWeeTalk” live session. For this week, 30 lucky followers had been chosen.
“Next week, we will give away some more. After all, we have more than a hundred of these red horse plushies to give away,” say Wee. —DayakDaily
