SIBU (Feb 18): Traffic congestion in key areas of the town will soon ease with the completion of several road upgrading projects, said Datuk Michael Tiang.

The Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government said among the main projects is the upgrading of Jalan Ulu Sungai Merah into a two-way road, which is now in its final stage and scheduled for full completion by May.

“The project is expected to help reduce congestion and improve traffic flow especially during peak hours following the increase in traffic volume in the area.

“In about three months, road users will be able to enjoy more comfortable and safer roads,” he told the media at his Chinese New Year open house on Wednesday.

The Pelawan assemblyman said the upgrading of Jalan Ulu Sungai Merah is part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to improve the road network in the rapidly developing area.

He noted the growth in housing and commercial developments has led to an increase in the number of vehicles, making it necessary to implement both short-term and long-term measures to ensure smoother traffic flow.

He said Jalan Ling Kai Cheng, which was previously upgraded, will undergo further improvements to enhance traffic movement and road safety, particularly for students from nearby schools.

Tiang pointed out the road often experiences congestion in the morning and evening on school days, making the additional works necessary.

“In the Sungai Merah area, a traffic reorganisation plan is being prepared for Jalan Teng Chin Hua following feedback from residents and nearby institutions regarding congestion and safety concerns.

“The proposed measures include upgrading junctions, reorganising traffic flow and improving access routes to ensure smoother and more orderly movement of vehicles.

“This project is not complicated and can be implemented within a few months. We are confident that results will be seen in the near future,” he said.

He added feedback from the local community has been considered to ensure the measures implemented meet the needs of road users while supporting local economic growth.

He stressed that the implementation of these infrastructure projects is part of the Sarawak government’s continuous efforts to strengthen basic facilities in the town in line with the state’s development agenda towards achieving developed status by 2030.
