KUCHING (Jan 10): Sarawak is hosting a vibrant global arts showcase with the ‘Kita Orang: Blue & White 400 International Art Exhibition 2025’.

Featuring works from approximately 400 artists representing 28 nations, the exhibition is underway at Artavern Art Space in Kota Samarahan until January 25.

State Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Sebastian Ting, highlighted the event’s significance during its opening.

“This Sarawak leg is the third installment, following the inaugural leg held in Kuala Lumpur last June and the subsequent one in Penang last November,” he said, describing the gathering of 400 international artists in blue and white themes as a wonderful occasion that helps expose Sarawak to the world.

He also noted that about 75 per cent of the participants are Malaysian artists, with the remainder bringing a global perspective.

“From what I gather, five of the 400 artists are Americans who are thoroughly enjoying their time here and find Sarawak to be so different,” Ting shared.

“Some of them are first timers here, learning about Sarawak. This exhibition is a good platform for them to share their cultures, arts and beliefs.”

He emphasised that such events provide a crucial avenue for local artists to learn and exchange experiences with international counterparts, elevating their artistic practice.

The deputy minister pointed out that international exhibitions of this scale benefit Sarawak by boosting tourism and elevating the state’s profile globally.

He extended his appreciation to the organiser, Lai Lai Art Gallery, for bringing the event to Sarawak and expressed hope for more such events to attract visitors and foster greater awareness of the region.

“We encourage our artists to organise their own exhibitions. This can be the beginning of a journey towards future collaborations,” he said.

Ting also shared promising developments for the local arts scene, thanking Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“A new performing arts centre is soon to be developed and the former Resident’s Office opposite the Central Police Station has been gazetted as an art gallery under the ministry,” he said, adding these venues will emerge as wonderful platforms for the local artists to shine.
