MIRI (Sept 15): Cardiovascular disease, a silent killer that often strikes without warning, is a complex issue with multifaceted causes including unhealthy lifestyles, genetics and environmental factors.
In view of this, Transport Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin said with knowledge, awareness and concerted effort, the burden of heart disease could be significantly reduced and that a healthier future could be achieved.
He said this in his officiating address at the World Heart Day programme, organised by Borneo Medical Centre (BMC) in collaboration with the Lions Club of Miri Mandarin at Permaisuri Imperial City Mall yesterday.
Lee said that the world today is celebrating the progress made in heart health research, prevention and treatment.
“We applaud the tireless efforts of healthcare professionals, researchers and community leaders who have dedicated their lives to combating this insidious disease. However, there is still much work to be done.
“We must continue to promote healthy lifestyle choices, such as exercising regularly, maintaining balanced diets as well as avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption,” he said.
Lee added that every person should play a role in advocating for policies that support heart health and ensure access to affordable healthcare for all.
“Let us make a pledge on this World Heart Day to prioritise our heart health and the health of those around us, as well as commit to making healthier choices, supporting heart health initiatives and spreading awareness about this critical issue.
“Together, we can create a world where heart disease is a thing of the past and everyone can live a long, healthy and fulfilling life,” he said further.
Moreover, Lee also commended the work and commitment by the event organiser to continuously serve and create health awareness to the community.
“My sincere thanks to Borneo Medical Centre Miri and Lions Club of Miri Mandarin for putting such an effort in organising this event for the community.
“Today’s World Heart Day programme, with the theme ‘Every Beat Matters’, is a global event dedicated to raising awareness about cardiovascular disease, the world’s leading cause of death.
“This day serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of heart health and the collective responsibility we bear to protect and preserve our hearts,” said Lee.
Meanwhile, BMC Medical director Dr Kenny Yeap Kim Pey in his welcoming address said that the event was a community outreach programme aimed at creating a healthier and safer Miri.
“Today’s event is a chance (for the public) to learn about heart disease, its risks and how to prevent it. Every heartbeat matters, and by understanding heart health, we can make a real difference.
“Together, we can reduce the impact of heart disease in our community. Let’s use this World Heart Day as a catalyst for a healthier, more vibrant future,” he said further.
Also present at the function were Lions Club of Miri Mandarin president Simon Yong.
