KUCHING (March 16): The introduction of a Centralised Ticketing System (CTS) at the Kuching Sentral bus terminal here will help modernise the ticketing system and provide greater convenience for passengers, said Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) Sarawak chairman Michael Kong Feng Nian.
He said the initiative was discussed during a meeting with representatives from Permodalan Assar Sdn Bhd, the owner of Kuching Sentral bus terminal, together with Sentral Solution Sdn Bhd, which has been appointed as the terminal operator.
“The CTS initiative aims to create a common ticketing platform where members of the public can conveniently purchase bus tickets for various express bus operators through a single system,” he said in a statement.
Kong noted that the introduction of the CTS serves as a positive step towards modernising the ticketing system at Kuching Sentral.
“It will provide greater convenience to passengers while also allowing bus operators the option to operate with fewer physical counters should they choose to do so.
“This could potentially reduce overhead costs associated with counter rentals and manpower, while improving efficiency within the terminal,” he said.
During the meeting, Kong also highlighted several policies recently implemented by CVLB Sarawak relating to the operations of express buses.
One of the key policies is the prohibition of cargo being transported within the passenger cabin of express buses.
“All goods and belongings must be stored properly in the designated cargo compartment to ensure safety and comfort for passengers.
“We have requested the terminal operator to assist CVLB Sarawak in monitoring and ensuring that operators comply with this requirement,” he said.
He also reminded the terminal operator that express bus operators are now required to provide mandatory discounted fares to senior citizens, persons with disabilities (OKU), and students.
“With the implementation of the CTS, it is important that the system is configured to ensure that these groups are automatically offered the appropriate discounted fares when purchasing tickets,” he said.
In addition, Kong raised concerns over the poor air-conditioning conditions at Kuching Sentral, noting that the terminal can become extremely warm and stuffy, particularly during peak travel periods when passenger traffic is high.
“For the comfort and well-being of the public, I have requested the management to look into repairing and improving the existing air-conditioning system.
“At the very least, temporary solutions such as mobile air coolers should be installed to improve ventilation and comfort while more permanent solutions are being implemented,” he said.
He added that CVLB Sarawak looks forward to continued collaboration with the terminal owner and operator to further enhance the efficiency, safety and comfort of public transportation services for the people.
“Strengthening coordination among all stakeholders is crucial in ensuring that facilities such as Kuching Sentral continue to serve the public effectively,” said Kong.
