KUCHING, Feb 22: The Ramadan bazaar in Kota Padawan, located beside the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) building, continues to draw steady crowds despite its modest scale, offering residents a convenient spot to purchase traditional fare ahead of breaking fast.

Earlier today, MPP councillor Cr Tan Kai conducted a walkabout at the site together with Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang to observe stall arrangements and the overall setup.

While the afternoon remained relatively quiet due to the heat, the number of visitors increased significantly towards evening as families and individuals began arriving to purchase food for iftar.

Three visitors interviewed by DayakDaily declined to disclose their real names. One of them, who identified herself only as Chacha, 27, said she makes it a point to visit Ramadan bazaars whenever she has the opportunity.

“If there is an opportunity, I will definitely come. I also go sightseeing, but when I go to a Ramadan bazaar, I always look for rice. I’m not a fan of kuih and cakes because I can find it elsewhere,” she said.

Chacha typically allocates around RM25 for a meal. However, she noted that not all purchases have met expectations, recalling an instance at a different bazaar where the chicken she bought was undercooked.

She also expressed hope that future bazaars would place greater emphasis on environmental sustainability.

“I hope future bazaars would reduce plastic use and favour more sustainable packaging,” she said.

Another visitor, who gave his name as Micky, 30, said he attends the bazaar annually with his wife, budgeting between RM60 and RM70 for dinner for both of them.

“I like the food options available here, but I do wish that more stalls were open,” he said.

He acknowledged that he had occasionally encountered undercooked items, including burgers and nasi lemak with fried chicken but said this has not discouraged him from returning each year.

“Adding more food varieties and improving payment options, such as DuitNow QR codes, for greater convenience will definitely be my feedback,” he said when asked for feedback regarding the Kota Padawan Ramadan bazaar.

Meanwhile, a third visitor who identified himself only as Dings, 30, said he visits the bazaar occasionally and usually spends about RM15 per visit. Martabak remains his must have item each year.

“Expanding the bazaar area could help ease congestion and improve visitor comfort as evening crowds grow,” he suggested.

Overall, while visitors expressed satisfaction with the variety and atmosphere, they also highlighted areas for improvement, including food quality control, payment convenience and sustainability practices, reflecting constructive feedback that could further enhance the Ramadan bazaar experience in Kota Padawan in the years ahead. — DayakDaily
