KUCHING, Dec 26: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) Sarawak has taken swift action following a viral complaint alleging that RON95 petrol was being mixed with diesel or water at a PETRONAS station in Samarahan Expressway.
A team of four enforcement officers conducted an on-site inspection at the station at approximately 2.30pm, after receiving reports from a social media page Sarawak Roads Update.
An Enquiry Paper (EP) has since been opened under Section 5(1)(b) of the Trade Descriptions Act 2011 for violation of Section 6(1)(d), which addresses misleading or false trade descriptions relating to goods.
KPDN Sarawak director Matthew Dominic Barin emphasised that prompt enforcement action was taken to protect consumer rights.
“Any trader found committing such offenses may face severe penalties under the Trade Descriptions Act 2011, including fines up to RM500,000 for corporate entities and up to RM250,000 or imprisonment for non-corporate entities for repeat offenses,” he said in a statement today.
Matthew also urged traders and distributors to comply fully with existing laws and regulations, while encouraging the public to assist in monitoring business practices.
Complaints or information on business misconduct can be reported via WhatsApp at 019-848 8000, email at [email protected], the Call Centre at 1-800-886-800, or through the Ez ADU KPDN smartphone application.
“KPDN Sarawak welcomes reports from the public and other agencies as part of our ongoing efforts to safeguard consumer rights,” Matthew added.
The incident followed widespread reports from motorists that their cars and motorcycles stalled shortly after refuelling at the PETRONAS station along the Samarahan Expressway.
Information circulating online suggested that a technical malfunction in the station’s fuel storage system may have caused fuel contamination.
PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad (PDB) confirmed that several vehicles were affected and said the station was temporarily closed to facilitate investigations. Operations at the station resumed later the same day.
PDB assured customers that all other PETRONAS stations are operating normally and are not affected by the incident. The company is in contact with affected customers and has taken necessary steps to resolve the matter promptly. — DayakDaily
