KUCHING (April 8): The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) foiled an attempt to misappropriate subsidised fuel when it raided a premises in Demak Laut here and seized 4,000 litres of diesel.

KPDN Sarawak director Matthew Dominic Barin said the operation was a joint effort with the Marine Police Force and Air Operations Force following intelligence gathered.

“The premises is believed to have been used as a storage site for diesel without a valid permit from the authorities.

“A total of 4,000 litres of diesel valued at RM8,600 was found stored in a skid tank,” he said in a statement.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 21 of the Control of Supplies Act 1961 for possession or control of controlled goods under suspicious circumstances.

Individuals convicted under the Section can be fined up to RM1 million or jailed for up to three years, or both.

For second and subsequent offences, they may be fined up to RM3 million or jailed for up to five years, or both.

“For companies, they may be fined up to RM2 million, and up to RM5 million for second and subsequent offences,” he added.

Matthew said KPDN Sarawak remains committed to strengthening strategic cooperation with other enforcement agencies, including the police, to curb the misappropriation of controlled goods, particularly diesel.

He added that firm action will be taken against any parties found to be involved in the misappropriation of government-subsidised goods.
