KUCHING (Feb 7): The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) Sarawak seized over 12 tonnes of packet cooking oil at two premises in Sejingkat here after a nominal inspection revealed widespread weight discrepancies.

KPDN Sarawak director Matthew Dominic Barin said the operation involved six enforcement officers who examined 1kg cooking oil packets following public complaints submitted through the KPDN e-complaint portal.

“This nominal inspection was done using a High Precision Weighing Device, which uncovered that all 125 samples weighed less than the stipulated 1kg, with an alarming average weight of just 0.9791kg.

“The total seized amounted to 12,410 kilogrammes of cooking oil, valued at RM31,025,” he said in a statement.

Legal action has been initiated against the two premises suspected of breaching Paragraph 7 of the Trade Description Order (Marking of Quantity for Packaged Goods) 2023.

The cooking oil packet store in boxes at one of the raided premises.

Offenders may face hefty fines or imprisonment, with individuals risking penalties up to RM100,000 or three years in prison for a first offence; and companies up to RM200,000 for first offence.

In light of this operation, KPDN Sarawak urged all distributors and traders to adhere strictly to existing laws and regulations.

The department also welcome further complaints from the public through various channels, including WhatsApp (019-8488000), email ([email protected]), call centre (1-800-8868800) or via the smartphone app, Ez ADU KPDN.
