KUCHING (April 1): A beneficiary under the Low Income Family Empowerment (LIFE) programme by the Ministry of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development (KPWK) has received assistance to strengthen her financial standing.

According to a statement from KPWK, the recipient, Nor Karmira Benny Karmilan, is a single mother facing financial challenges while caring for her five school-going children, including a son with disabilities.

The aid, in the form of a digital camera, was presented by Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, wife of Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, at the residence of Minister Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah here on Tuesday.

“Based on an initial assessment by the Social Development Council under KPWK, the recipient faces financial constraints due to the responsibility of supporting five school-going children, including one child with disabilities who requires close care.

“This situation limits her ability to work full-time,” the statement read.

It added that the assistance under the LIFE initiative aims to help her generate a more stable income by leveraging her skills in photography.

“The income she earns from part-time photography work is irregular, and although she receives monthly assistance, it remains insufficient to cover the cost of living and the family’s special needs.

“With the digital camera, she is expected to expand her services and turn her passion into a more sustainable livelihood,” KPWK added.

Nor Karmira previously studied Photography Technology at Giatmara here and was among the outstanding students in the field.

“As part of an intervention effort, the ministry has supported her through the LIFE programme by providing specialised equipment to assist in income-generating activities, enabling Nor Karmira to turn her interest and skills in photography into a more sustainable source of livelihood,” it added.
