Roof replacement on the observation tower formed a key part of the restoration of Kuching Civic Centre.By Amanda L
KUCHING, July 13: Kuching Civic Centre officially reopened to the public today following the completion of restoration and upgrading works, welcoming visitors back to one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks.
The RM5 million project, which began in 2025 included the replacement of the roof on the building’s iconic observation tower after the previous structure sustained damage from strong winds. The refurbishment was completed ahead of schedule.
The facility has been a prominent feature of the city’s skyline since it was officially opened on Sept 4, 1988 by the late former Chief Minister of Sarawak, Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.
Its 74-metre observation tower remains one of Kuching’s best-known landmarks.
With its reopening, Kuching Civic Centre (also known as Dewan Suarah Kuching) is once again available for community programmes, cultural exhibitions, recreational activities and other public events, reaffirming its role as a gathering place for residents and visitors alike. — DayakDaily
