KUCHING (March 20): This year’s Hari Raya celebrations will be marked by greater prudence as communities here adjust their spending amid economic uncertainties.
Counsellor Mohammad Dzulkiflie Pathi said he will celebrate the occasion as usual, but with a more mindful approach to expenses.
“I will be celebrating Hari Raya in a simple and meaningful way this year. Since it is a once-a-year occasion, I still want to honour the celebration with my family.

“At the same time, I am keeping my spending moderate and focusing on togetherness rather than extravagance. Overall, it is a normal celebration, just approached more thoughtfully,” he told The Borneo Post.
Tourism lecturer Nurhafeezha Ali shared similar sentiments, noting that while preparations are ongoing, families are being more cautious with their spending.
“Preparations for Hari Raya this year are generally proceeding as usual, but many people, including myself, are being more careful with spending.
“Global conflicts and economic uncertainties have contributed to rising living costs, including higher prices of goods,” she said.

Nurhafeezha said Hari Raya is a time to be with loved ones, and that the values of togetherness, forgiveness and strengthening relationships are far more meaningful than material extravagance.
“Spending is still necessary, but it is approached with care and moderation,” she added.
Khairil Zharif Affindie, 29, a producer, host, news anchor and emcee, said his celebrations will largely remain unchanged, though he will be mindful of expenses.
“I will still celebrate as usual — returning to my hometown, meeting family and enjoying meals together.

“However, I will avoid unnecessary spending. The vibe and meaning of Hari Raya remain the same for me,” Khairil said.
Student Nur Hidayah Awang Jamaluddin, 19, said her family’s celebrations will proceed as normal, but costs have been higher than expected.

“This year’s celebration is similar to previous years. However, in terms of spending, it has been higher than expected, especially for household items and festive clothing,” she said.
Administrative and diplomatic officer Mohamad Azfar Matnor, 37, said his family will scale down celebrations this year following recent bereavements.
“This year, our family will not be celebrating as much. We will still gather and visit relatives, but that will be the extent of it,” he said, noting that the loss of his elder brother last year and his mother-in-law earlier this year has affected the family’s mood.

Despite the toned-down celebration, he emphasised that the family bond remains strong.
“Our family bond is very strong, and to preserve that, we will simply be present for one another,” he said.
