KUCHING (Dec 24): The public has been urged to seek immediate medical attention if they experience dengue-like symptoms, as Kuching has recorded dengue cases over the past two months.

Kuching South mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng advised the public to remain vigilant by checking and eliminating potential mosquito breeding sites in and around their homes, including stagnant water, water containers and clogged drains.

“Make sure there is no stagnant water in your house. If there is, change it or cover it. The council will do its part, such as flushing drains, but inside your house, you must do your part,” he said.

He also reminded residents that enforcement action could be taken against those found to have mosquito breeding sites at their premises.

“If you are found to have mosquito larvae, you will be penalised RM250 for each larva,” he said.

He further advised residents to seek immediate medical treatment if they experience any dengue symptoms.

“Seek medical attention immediately if you or anyone around you experiences headaches, high fever, body aches or vomiting, as dengue cannot be treated at home or by taking Panadol.

“Residents should also eliminate all potential mosquito breeding sites, both inside and outside their homes. For houses that could not be accessed during inspections or fogging operations, occupants are advised to carry out aerosol spraying inside their homes upon returning,” he said.

The public is encouraged to use larvicide recommended by health authorities such as temephos, to help prevent mosquito breeding in residential areas. These can be purchased at nearby pesticide shops.

An awareness programme related to the initiative was officiated by Wee at Fu Yu Coffee shop here on Wednesday. Besides Kuching, other areas including Lundu and Serian have also recorded dengue cases over the same period, although the situation remains under control.
