KUCHING, April 23: The achievements of 40 chefs who clinched championship titles, gold medals and outstanding recognitions at the Global Chef Challenge Malaysia (GCCM) 2026 in Bintulu have elevated Kuching’s standing as a UNESCO Creative Cities Network of Gastronomy and firmly placed Sarawak on the world culinary map.

Kuching City South Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng lauded the chefs’ success at the international-level competition held from April 15–16, saying he was proud of their accomplishments alongside world-class culinary talents.

He said the feat reflects Kuching’s growing reputation as a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, with local chefs carrying the responsibility of preserving culinary heritage while pushing innovation.

“Winning and rubbing shoulders with 200 international entries, this is not just the title we carried but a responsibility we uphold of Kuching as a gastronomy city; we continue to preserve culinary heritage while pushing innovation.

“It means we must honour our traditions while competing on the global stage. Our chefs are bringing the flavours of Sarawak to the world, from iconic Sarawak laksa to contemporary culinary creations that meet international culinary standards.

“They are not only representing our culture but elevating it and this is what it means to be a UNESCO Creative Cities Network of Gastronomy,” he said at the GCCM 2026 press conference at MBKS headquarters today.

Wee added that Sarawak is no longer merely participating in culinary competitions but competing and winning at the highest level, setting new benchmarks in the process.

He also highlighted that Sarawak chefs being recognised as part of an international judging panel shows the growing global respect for local culinary expertise.

“MBKS will reaffirm its commitment to strengthening culinary momentum in the city and to promote gastronomy internationally, to support new talents, from young students to professional chefs.

“We will continue to build strong partnerships across institutions, industries, and communities,” he said.

Wee also expressed hope that the public will have the opportunity to enjoy the award-winning dishes from GCCM 2026 chefs at the upcoming Kuching Food Festival 2026.

GCCM is an event recognised by the World Association of Chef Societies.

Also present at the press conference was his deputy, Dato’ Zaiedi Suhaili. — DayakDaily
