KUCHING (September 13): Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has described cultural events such as the Chinese Cultural Festival as crucial platforms for fostering cultural exchange in Sarawak.

He said it is crucial for Sarawakians to remember their roots and cultures to ensure they are not lost over time.

“So while we enjoy the benefits of progress, we must always remember our roots and our culture.

“It is essential to pass these values down to future generations so that they continue to be inherited and spread from one generation to the next.

“Without culture, you lose your identity. Without identity, you are lost,” he told reporters when met at the 39th National Chinese Cultural Festival torch lightning ceremony outside the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) building here today.

He noted that over 2,000 participants are involved in the festival, which runs from September 13 to 15.

“This event helps unite our people and maintains the harmony we value in Sarawak,” he said.

He also highlighted the community’s commitment, noting that despite the challenging weather, people were willing to gather.

“This shows that achieving our goals is not easy. We go through hardships and share good times, but ultimately, we reach our destination, and that destination is something everyone will appreciate,” he added.

Wee further remarked that Sarawak serves as a positive example for visitors, demonstrating a harmonious environment.

“Visitors coming to Sarawak, whether for business or leisure, first notice the welcoming atmosphere. When people are happy, it creates a positive experience for everyone.

“During holidays, visitors want to see that everyone around them is content and not in conflict,” he said.

Also present were the Federation of Chinese Associations of Malaysia President Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Goh Tian Chuan, and Federation of Chinese Associations of Sarawak President Datuk Richard Wee among other guests.
