KUCHING (March 18): Lion dance is not only a captivating performance art but also a vital cultural heritage that embodies the Chinese values of diligence, discipline and unity, said Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.
According to him, the art form integrates martial arts, artistry and teamwork, while evolving into a cultural activity enjoyed by people of different backgrounds.
“This not only injects new life into traditional culture, but also serves as an essential bridge to promote inter-ethnic interaction and friendship,” he said during the 2026 Chinese New Year gathering dinner organised by the Lian Heng Wushu Association on Monday night.
Wee noted that the association has, over the years, actively nurtured a new generation of lion dance performers through training, competitions, and cultural exchange activities.
He said these efforts had contributed significantly to the development and promotion of lion dance culture in Kuching and Sarawak.
Wee added that cultural development relied on a stable social environment, noting that Sarawak’s progress over the years had been driven by political stability and pragmatic governance.
“Under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, the state government has continued to advance economic development, infrastructure, education, healthcare and digital transformation.
“These include initiatives such as free tertiary education, the digital economy and green energy development, which lay a strong foundation for Sarawak’s future,” said Wee.
He also urged the public to appreciate the current stability and continue supporting the government in implementing people-centric policies so that development benefits all.
Wee expressed hope that the association would continue to attract more young people to participate in martial arts and lion dance, ensuring the growth of traditional culture in the modern era.
Meanwhile, Lian Heng Wushu Association president Master Ronny Chin said the dinner was made more lively with the participation of guests from various sectors.
He said the event not only provided an opportunity to enjoy good food but also served as a platform to strengthen friendships and look ahead to the future.
Chin added that although the association faced challenges over the past year, it had continued to grow and achieve positive results with the support of various parties and the collective efforts of its members.
He also expressed appreciation for the continued trust, adding that the association would strive for an even brighter future through joint efforts.
