KUCHING (Feb 15): Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has called on residents to adopt practical safety measures at home to prevent fires and burglaries during the Chinese New Year.
Highlighting the festive season as a time when families travel or host gatherings, Wee reminded the public that simple precautions can go a long way in safeguarding both lives and property.
“While festive decorations add joy and colour to the celebration, they can pose serious fire hazards if not used responsibly,” he said in a press statement on Sunday.
“Overloaded sockets, faulty wiring, and prolonged use of electrical devices may lead to overheating and increase the risk of residential fires.”
Wee also warned that unattended homes could become targets for break-ins if basic security measures are neglected.
“Turning off unused electrical appliances, checking door and window locks, activating alarm systems if available, and ensuring that decorative lighting is properly installed can significantly reduce both fire and burglary risks,” he said, stressing the importance of leaving homes in a safe and secure condition.
He further advised residents to inform trusted relatives or neighbours prior to travelling.
“This way, they can help keep an eye on your property. Such simple precautions can help detect any unusual situations early and allow timely action if needed,” he added.
Wee reminded the public that safety should remain a top priority during festive celebrations.
“Let us celebrate Chinese New Year with peace of mind by taking these preventive steps. A safe and secure home ensures a happy and worry-free festive season for everyone.”
