KUCHING (Jan 30): Kuching has been selected as a port of call for the internationally recognised Ship for Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Programme (SSEAYP), marking the programme’s debut in Sarawak, said Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
The Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development said the cruise-based initiative, pioneered by the Japanese government, is part of SSEAYP 2027, which runs Jan 3 to Feb 17.
“This is a very meaningful and prestigious programme that has previously been held in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah.
“We are proud that Kuching has been chosen as one of the destinations,” Abdul Karim said during a press conference after receiving a courtesy call from SSEAYP representatives.
The programme features three ports of call such as Cambodia, Malaysia, Sarawak (Kuching) and the Philippines.
Participants, aged between 18 and 30, will engage in youth activities at each stop, including courtesy visits to local readers.
Malaysia Youth and Sports department director-general Azura Abidin said 211 youths from 10 Asean countries, including Malaysia, will participate in the 50th edition of SSEAYP, with each country sending 17 participants.
She added that the Japanese government will cover all travel expenses, while host destinations, in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, will manage part of the logistical and activity costs.
“Kuching is a unique destination and offers a valuable experience for the participants, especially in showcasing the cultural diversity and uniqueness of Sarawak,” said Azura.
More than 200 participants, including ship crew from Japan, are expected to arrive, with hopes for strong support from the Sarawak government for the welcoming ceremony.
The SSEAYP programme, which began in 1974, aims to strengthen friendship and cooperation among youths from Asean countries and Japan, while broadening their perspectives through exposure to different cultures and socio-economic environments.
Also present were Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu and SSEAYP International Malaysia (Kabesa) Che Muhamad Nordin Ismail.
