Chiew said he has previously received “numerous” complaints regarding the “rough and unprofessional attitude” of some staff at the hospital.

SIBU (Dec 6): The allegation by a senior citizen, who claimed he was subjected to rough handling and extremely inappropriate remarks by a doctor at Sibu Hospital on Dec 3, is deeply concerning, said Stanley Chiew.

The private secretary to Lanang MP Alice Lau said he has previously received “numerous” complaints regarding the “rough and unprofessional attitude” of some staff at the hospital.

“I believe there is no smoke without fire, and every incident has its cause. Therefore, I will formally bring this matter to the attention of the Sibu Hospital director,” he said in a statement.

“We must not allow one bad apple to spoil the whole barrel nor allow a few rogue individuals to tarnish the reputation of the many dedicated, responsible, and professional healthcare workers, or erode the public’s trust in them.”

In this regard, Chiew called on the senior citizen involved, as well as any other patients who may have faced similar mistreatment, to personally meet with him.

He said only with complete information can the matter be pursued with the relevant authorities for a proper and fair investigation.

He also said the incident, if proven true, underscores the urgent need to strengthen professionalism, empathy, and patient-care standards within the country’s healthcare system.

“The words allegedly said by the doctor to the patient, ‘Uncle, why don’t you just die then no need to suffer so much’, as well as the physical mishandling despite the patient’s vulnerable condition, are utterly unacceptable and completely against the ethics, professionalism, and compassion expected of any medical practitioner,” he said.

Chiew stressed that no patient should ever be treated without dignity, respect, and proper care.

“I will continue to monitor this matter closely and push for necessary actions to protect the welfare and dignity of all patients in Sibu,” he said.
