SIBU (Feb 13): Private secretary to Lanang MP, Stanley Chiew, has called for an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the shoplot collapse at Jalan Pahlawan Lorong 4 here early today.

Chiew said the probe should determine the real cause of the collapse, including whether any human negligence was involved in past building or structural engineering works.

“At the same time, a thorough safety assessment of the surrounding area should be carried out as soon as possible, and all necessary preventive measures must be taken to prevent similar incidents from happening again,” he said in a statement.

He stressed that all relevant Sarawak government departments must treat the incident as a serious lesson.

“When approving any development projects, as well as when issuing occupation permits, authorities must exercise greater strictness and prudence, and strengthen supervision to ensure that all projects fully comply with safety standards related to geology, foundations, building structures, fire safety, public health, and other relevant regulations,” he said.

He urged the Sibu Resident Office, the State Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, and the Sibu Municipal Council to take concrete and responsible action in monitoring the incident and ensuring their respective duties are fully discharged.

Although no casualties were reported, Chiew said the incident caused serious concern among nearby residents and business operators.

“Fortunately, the incident did not occur during office hours or a peak period with heavy human traffic. In particular, the collapsed shoplots housed a tuition centre.

“Had the incident happened during the daytime or evening tuition hours, the consequences would have been unimaginable.

“This is by no means alarmist rhetoric, but a grave warning of a tragedy that nearly occurred,” he said.

Chiew also recalled a road collapse at Lorong Rantau Panjang Jaya 7 on the night of February 4 last year, which affected eight households.

Barely a year later, Sibu has once again witnessed a sudden shoplot collapse, he noted.

“This undoubtedly sounds the alarm once more on public safety. Such incidents should not be allowed to recur,” he added.
