SIBU (Sept 29): Phase 1 of the boat shed construction project at Sibu Passenger Terminal here has been completed, said Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.

The state Transport Minister said the project started on Dec 8 last year and was completed Aug 22 this year, ahead of its expected completion date on Sept 7.

This project, including the one at the JKR RC Wharf at Piasau Industrial Estate, Miri, is part of the Sarawak government’s initiative to enhance riverine transport infrastructure, he added.

“Approved under the 12th Malaysia Plan, this project has a total scheme value of RM20 million, covering two key locations namely Sibu Passenger Terminal and JKR RC Wharf at Piasau Industrial Estate in Miri.

“Today, we witness the Phase 1 completion of Sibu Passenger Terminal with a contract sum of RM904,255,” he said when met during his site visit at the terminal here today.

According to Lee, the floating boat sheds are durable floating platforms made from 22 concrete boxes, metal frames, roofing, guide piles, gangways, fencing, rubber fenders, solar flood lights, marine lanterns, and wood composite plastic flooring.

“This project provides secure storage and maintenance for enforcement boats, enhancing the safety and efficiency of river patrols and emergency response.

“It is also to improve river transport, benefit commuters and businesses, and connect communities for better access to essential services,” he said.

Accompanying Lee during the visit were Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang, Sarawak Rivers Board controller Lt-Col Ding Tiew Wong, and Councillor Roland Ting.
