Leeroy is eager to prove himself on the international stage.

KUCHING (March 5): Sarawak sanda head coach Tsan Nieng Khai has hailed the selection of young fighter Leeroy Valentine Lavern to represent Malaysia at the World Junior Wushu Championships in Tianjin, China, as a milestone for the state.

Leeroy is the first athlete from the state to represent Malaysia at the World Junior Wushu Championships — a breakthrough for the sport’s development in Sarawak.

The youngster earned his place in the national squad following an impressive performance at last year’s 4th KBS-KPM National Junior Wushu Championships where he clinched a silver medal.

“It was a selection based on merit. He performed very well in the national meet and that result paved the way for his selection,” said Tsan.

Leeroy is one of only two athletes chosen for the world tournament from March 23-31.

Having trained under Tsan for more than two years, the now well-rounded athlete has been equipped with techniques ranging from stand-up striking to takedowns and grappling through an Asian MMA-based training syllabus.

“Skill-wise, he is very capable and understands different martial arts philosophies which gives him an advantage,” Tsan noted.

However, he acknowledged that the international stage will test the youngster’s mental strength.

“He is still very young, and competing without familiar guidance may affect his confidence. But this will be an important learning curve for him to grow as a national athlete,” he added.

Leeroy, who began training in sanda in February 2024 after switching from taekwondo, said he was motivated to explore a new discipline while improving his physical condition.

“I wanted to try a different martial art and challenge myself,” he said.

Since making his debut in 2024, he has compiled an encouraging list of achievements including winning the Junior Wushu Sanda Open under the National Sports Council (MSN) and the Kuching Division Wushu Tournament title.

He also competed in the Kejohanan Muaythai Piala TYT Sarawak 2024 and participated in amateur muaythai competitions in Bintulu and Miri in 2025.

He represented the 52kg junior category at the Sarawak Wushu Talents Scouting Championship in 2024 and 2025.

Looking ahead, Leeroy is determined to make his mark in China.

“I will give my very best to make my country proud,” he said.

He also encouraged youths to explore sports and discover their potential while expressing gratitude for the support of his coach, parents, teachers and friends.
