MIRI (Jan 20): Residents of Long Lellang and surrounding villages may soon see an end to years of hardship caused by poor road access, as plans are in place to upgrade the existing route.
Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department Datuk Gerawat Gala said the project is expected to be tendered by the end of this month.
“If everything proceeds as planned, construction works are expected to commence this June.
“The proposed project involves upgrading the existing 4.7-kilometre road to Long Lellang, with works focused on critical sections that frequently cause problems, especially during the rainy season,” he said during a briefing session with residents on Monday.
Gerawat said a key component of the project is upgrading a 1.185-kilometre stretch of concrete road at critical sections to ensure a stronger and more durable route.
The Mulu assemblyman added that 3.69 kilometres of gravel road at other critical sections will also be improved to enhance passability and user safety.
“The project further includes the replacement of 31 existing log culverts with safer and more functional structures.
“In addition, three wooden bridges at river crossings will be replaced with steel composite bridges, which are stronger, safer and more suitable for long-term use,” he said.
Gerawat said the state government, through the Highland Development Agency as the implementing agency, is committed to ensuring the project meets prescribed specifications and standards for the benefit of local residents.
He noted that road access is a vital catalyst for development, particularly in interior areas such as Long Lellang.
“A good road not only facilitates the movement of residents, but also significantly impacts the local economy, access to education and healthcare, as well as community safety,” he said.
He also called for full cooperation from residents in providing support, feedback and joint monitoring to ensure the project is completed smoothly and delivers maximum benefits to the community.
