KUCHING (March 14): The Selampit bridge construction project in Lundu has reached 36.51 per cent physical completion, with key works currently underway including piling, pier structure construction and girder concreting.

According to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report, the RM22.9 million project involves the construction of a 160-metre reinforced concrete bridge to replace the existing crossing and improve safety for road users.

Federal deputy minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Rubiah Wang said the new infrastructure is expected to facilitate smoother travel for residents, improve access to surrounding areas and stimulate local economic growth and community development once completed.

Rubiah made the remarks during a site visit to inspect the progress of the bridge project on Thursday.

The bridge project is being implemented in tandem with the RM69.5 million Kampung Kendaie–Selampit road construction project, which is scheduled for full completion on Nov 3, 2027.

The road project is carried out on a design-and-build basis and includes the construction of approximately 12 kilometres of new premix road, built to the Public Works Department (JKR) R2 standard.

Its scope also covers design works and technical studies such as a Road Safety Audit (RSA) and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).

In addition, the project includes the construction of drainage systems such as culverts and roadside drains, the installation of road furniture, and the development of junctions to ensure safer and more comfortable travel for road users.

In a Facebook post after the visit, Rubiah said she personally inspected the Selampit Bridge construction site to review the progress of the project.

“The visit aims to ensure the project runs smoothly and does not face further delays. I hope it can be completed as soon as possible as it is very important for the convenience of villagers, especially students commuting to SK Selampit,” she said, expressing satisfaction with the progress made so far.

She added that the Kampung Kendaie–Selampit road construction project will provide greater convenience for residents and enhance connectivity for daily activities in the area.

Also present during the visit were Opar assemblyman Billy Sujang, Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) Sarawak director Mohd Syafiq Anas Abdullah, representatives from implementing agencies, local community leaders and the project contractor.
