SIBU (Jan 17): The Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF), particularly the 9th Infantry Brigade, remain firmly committed to safeguarding the security, peace and well-being of the people of Sarawak, including those in rural and border areas, despite negative perceptions circulating on social media.

Commander of the 9th Infantry Brigade, Brigadier General Dato Jafri Sulaiman, said the brigade’s area of responsibility covers almost three-quarters of Sarawak’s landmass, encompassing Lawas, Limbang, Ba’kelalan, Bario, as well as interior and border regions.

He said the presence of the MAF enables economic activities, healthcare services and the daily lives of communities to proceed in a peaceful and orderly environment.

“The peace we enjoy today is the result of the sacrifices of MAF personnel who are always ready to carry out their duties,” he said at the ‘Stress Management and Mental Health Programme’ at the 510th Territorial Army Regiment, Kem Sri Rejang here.

Jafri added that humanitarian assistance operations, known as ‘Ops Murni’, remain a key priority, particularly during disasters such as floods and landslides.

Through these operations, the MAF assists in delivering food aid, logistics and other essential support to affected residents.

He also stressed that it is unfair for the entire MAF to be viewed negatively due to corruption cases that are still under investigation and involve only certain individuals.

“Not all personnel are involved. We must wait for the court’s decision. The service and sacrifices of the MAF over decades should not be erased because of the actions of a handful of individuals,” he said.

On the issue of drug abuse, Jafri said the MAF adopts a firm, zero-tolerance approach, while working closely with the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) to raise awareness of the dangers of drugs, and with the Health Ministry on mental health initiatives.

He said programmes such as talks, exhibitions and counselling sessions are crucial, particularly in addressing mental stress among younger personnel.

Jafri expressed hope that such programmes would continue to be held regularly as a platform to strengthen ties between the MAF, government agencies and the community, ultimately enhancing the well-being of the people of Sarawak.
