KUCHING, March 14: Malaysia will increase its national rice stockpile to last up to nine months as part of a precautionary move to strengthen food security amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainties in the Middle East.
In a TVS news, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the measure is intended to ensure stable supplies of the country’s staple food should tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran continue to escalate.
He revealed that the Cabinet has approved the decision to expand Malaysia’s national rice reserve.
“The Cabinet has agreed to increase the country’s rice stockpile to cover the next nine months. This is an early step to ensure the nation’s food supply remains secure,” he told reporters at an event in Kuala Lumpur on Friday (March 13).
At the same time, Mohamad urged the public not to panic, stressing that Malaysia’s food supply remains sufficient.
He also encouraged Malaysians to celebrate the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri in a calm and moderate manner, echoing advice from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
“People should not worry for now. Let us celebrate Hari Raya calmly while practising moderation.
“Supplies of rice, chicken, eggs, fish, beef, buffalo meat, fresh milk, vegetables and fruits are all sufficient at least until May or June. There is no need for panic,” he added. — DayakDaily
