KUALA LUMPUR (March 6): A Bangladeshi national who had been living in Malaysia has been extradited to the United States (US) to face charges linked to a large-scale online child sexual exploitation case, following cooperation between Malaysian and US authorities.

In a statement Thursday (March 5), the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Alaska said Zobaidul Amin, 28, was transferred to Alaska from Malaysia by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on March 4, after Malaysian authorities facilitated the process.

The office said Amin made his initial appearance before the US District Court for the District of Alaska on Thursday.

FBI Director Kashyap Pramod Patel expressed his appreciation as well to the Malaysian government via his X account.

“Thank you to Legat Kuala Lumpur, the government of Malaysia, and our great local partners all over the country who assisted with the investigation and arrest,” he said.

According to court documents, Amin had been living in Malaysia and attending medical school prior to his arrest.

US authorities said Malaysian enforcement agencies had been working closely with the FBI and the US Department of Justice since September 2022 as part of the investigation.

During that period, Malaysia’s Attorney General’s Chambers had charged Amin with 13 counts related to the possession and production of child pornography.

US Attorney for the District of Alaska Michael J. Heyman said the suspect’s transfer reflected strong international law enforcement cooperation.

“The impact of this case is that of international magnitude. It stands as one of the most prolific cases of alleged online child exploitation the United States has ever seen,” he said in the statement.

Heyman also expressed appreciation to the Malaysian government and enforcement agencies for their collaboration in securing Amin’s transfer to the US.

Court documents alleged that Amin used social media platforms, including Instagram and Snapchat, to identify and coerce minor victims into producing sexually explicit images and videos.

Authorities said the alleged activities involved hundreds of minor victims in Alaska, elsewhere in the US, and abroad.

Amin faces multiple charges, including conspiracy to produce child pornography, conspiracy to receive and distribute child pornography, child exploitation enterprise, cyberstalking, aggravated identity theft, and wire fraud.

If convicted, he faces a sentence ranging from 20 years to life imprisonment.

Amin was first arrested in Malaysia on Sept 19, 2022, following a joint investigation involving the FBI and the Royal Malaysia Police, and was subsequently charged in the Sessions Court in Seremban with multiple offences under the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, including producing and possessing child sexual abuse material.

Amin, who was then a 24-year-old Bangladeshi medical student at a private university, pleaded not guilty to the charges which involved the alleged production of explicit images and videos through the Snapchat application and possession of hundreds of digital files found on electronic devices. – Bernama
